I suspect it's some of that old-fashioned plastic stuff that's somewhere between tinsel, and those crappy leis you could sometimes get at party supplies or bargain stores? What do you think?
Not plastic - I think nylon was the first synthetic to be made into threads but not until the mid 1930’s and it was a luxury item - think the fad of WW2 soldiers giving girl friends nylon stockings. I guess that is why the picture intrigued me as it seems weirdly out of time cause it does look plasticy! I guess it has to be a natural fibre but the costume is next level! Thanks for sharing it. :)
Ah! I didn’t even think about the history of plastic! Now I’m trying to resist going down the rabbit hole to find an answer!
Just think: some parent or carer (or nanny or …) spent hours constructing it. I wonder if the child loved it and insisted on wearing it to school and the shops, as my children would have, until it fell apart 🐝
My children never got such exciting costumes! I can remember one child who shall go unnamed wearing a Dorothy the dinosaur tail for a rather long time. Hope you have a super day. xo
Girl dressed as bee image is epic! What even is the body suit made out of?!?
The 1920 one? It's amazing, isn't it?
